The book of Joshua is a part of scripture that we’ve turned to time and time again in theonehundredyearsproject, especially when it comes to our prayer journey. God’s promise to Joshua that “wherever he set his feet” would be his, and the challenge “to take the land” that God had given them were part of why we prayed around our land before Easter.
The book of Joshua is the culmination of a promise, a promise that was around 500 years old, from when the promise was given by God to Abram, until Joshua and the people inherited the land and had rest from war. The book and the journey of the Israelites to get to their destination is a Kingdom picture of promise, patience, trust and inheritance. It’s a story that speaks to followers of Jesus on all levels.
Joshua has been part of my (Neil) daily readings over the past little while and God, as always, has been speaking to me through it. In Joshua 6, which I’ve written about recently, they come to the first city they faced in the Promised Land – Jericho. You all know the story but just for clarity…..God’s instruction to them was not to get the battering rams ready, it wasn’t to get into attack formation, it wasn’t to siege and starve the city – not even close. He told them to march around the city once a day in silence for 6 days and on the 7th day to march round it 7 times with the horns blaring and then give a shout. On the shout, the walls would fall down and they were to take the city. They did this, it happened as God said it would, and Jericho became theirs.
As I re-read this account again I was struck with a thought. I wonder if we should do this in our area? Should we walk around once a day for 7 days? I wasn’t sure if we could fit in 7 times in one day as it is a long loop! Further research has shown me that it’s in and around 16 miles which according to my research may have been the total walk that Joshua and the army made after the week. I’m seriously hoping we can walk it quicker than google is predicting though.
As we talked and prayed about this idea a bit more we began to think it might actually be an invitation from the Lord!
So guess what we are doing tomorrow and Friday? Lap one and two of our Triangle Prayer walk! For those of you who aren’t local to our area, the three towns we will walk and pray through form an area known as the Triangle. Please pray for us, we’ll post all about the first two laps over the next two days.
